Wickedness Walks Off The Ark
“(Noah) drank of the wine and became drunk and lay uncovered in his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brothers outside…”
You would think that an earth-altering, supernatural, and catastrophic flood that wipes out every living being and animal not on the ark would have also wiped out the wickedness of man. It did not. Look at what happens immediately following Noah and his children walking off of the ark. As soon as he can, Noah’s plants a vineyard, gets drunk, and passes out NAKED. While passed out naked, Noah’s son Ham “looks upon his nakedness”. (cf. Genesis 9:18-29) This is not simply / accidentally walking in while dad was getting out of the shower… to look upon ones nakedness is an ancient biblical euphemism. In Leviticus 20:17, among many other places, we see this idea and phrase laid out. It is sexual in nature and it is used to describe something that is a perversion of what God has designed. To “see ones nakedness” or to “uncover ones nakedness” is not just about looking at someone naked… if you know what I mean. Ham “took advantage of” his father while he was passed out drunk. OOF! Noah’s other two sons “covered his nakedness”… this is the total opposite of what Ham did… and the literal opposite of “to uncover ones nakedness”. They refused to participate in what Ham was instigating. It is both tragic and hard to believe that these people who were spared as well as BLESSED by God have responded this way. The similarities between the fallen sons of God in Genesis 6 - the very environment that brought about this utter wickedness - and Ham’s actions are uncanny really.
Look at what God does at the beginning of chapter 9: “And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth…(again) And you, be fruitful and multiply, increase greatly on the earth and multiply in it.” (v.1,7) Just like the sons of God before him, Ham had received a blessing from God as well as a mission / purpose / responsibility. God had given his blessing to Noah and his offspring and called them to be fruitful and multiply. God set Noah and his family up with a role to play in his cosmic story.
All of these humans - Noah, his wife, and his sons with their wives - had lived on the earth in the days of the wicked… during the days of the Nephilim. They were aware of the outcomes and possibilities… they knew what happens when you abandon your God-given place in the universe and forsake HIS blessings to run after what is forbidden, perverted, and corrupt.
Ham, driven by perverted sexual desire and lust abandons his God-given post just like the fallen angels before him. He rejects the blessing(s) given by God, and seeks to take what is forbidden and unnatural. There is NO WAY that Ham can carry out what God had called him to do by “looking upon the nakedness of his father”. Homosexual activity cannot bring forth children. Ham could not be “fruitful and multiply” or “fill the earth” this way. This action was a direct REJECTION of God’s blessing. It was in direct opposition to God’s instructions. It is hard to imagine a more corrupt way to oppose God’s plan or his instructions. Just like those fallen sons of God who took the daughters of men in Gen. 6 - Ham’s actions are an aligning with he seed of Satan. It is no coincidence that today the Homosexual agenda uses a rainbow as it’s symbol - the roots of this sin trace all the way back to Ham’s abuse of Noah.
When Noah wakes up, he realizes what has been done to him. (v.24) The result is a CURSE. Noah declares: ““Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be to his brothers. Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem; and let Canaan be his servant. May God enlarge Japheth,
and let him dwell in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be his servant.” (v.26,27) What is crazy is the way that the curse is put on Ham’s son - Canaan. Once again, the sins of the parents are passed down upon the children. Just as the evil Nephilim children bore the corrupted and wicked hearts of their parents, so do the children of Ham. In this way, the “seed of Satan” survives the flood. And guess what… SO DO THE NEPHILIM. And where do these Nephilim reside… well in the land of Canaan of course! The Israelite spies tell us so: “Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are…The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.” (Numbers 13:31-33) The seed wars continue! The remedy for man’s wickedness and the crushing of Satan’s skull did not come in the flood… it would have to wait for the coming of Jesus Christ! Tune in next time as the seed wars continue with giants in the land. Love you guys! - JDP
